Green Communities

The Green Communities Designation and Grant Program helps municipalities navigate and meet the five criteria required to become a Green Community, in turn qualifying municipalities for grants that finance additional energy efficiency and renewable energy projects at the local level.

The Town of Salisbury was awarded the 2016 Green Communities Designation Grant in February 2017, and recieved $160,695.00 in grant funds.

The Town has used these funds to:

May 2018 - Purchase a segway for Police beach patrol. (photo)

May 2018 - Conduct an Audit of 864 street lights (audit report)

January 2019 - Purchase an EV Charging station for the library (Photo)

February 2019 - Purchase an Electric Vehicle (2019 Chevy Bolt) for the Fire Department

March 2019 - Installation of solar-powered Big Belly trash and recycling receptacles at the Town Common, area parks, and the beach (photo) (photo)

August 2019 - Purchase an Electric Vehicle (2019 Chevy Bolt) for the Police Department

September 2019 - Purchase an EV Charging station for the Police Station

October 2019 -  Purchase an EV Charging station for the Police Station

January 2020 - Purchase an EV Charging station for the Fire Station

November 2020 - Weatherization of the Town Hall and DPW (2014 audit report) (2020 audit report)

October 2022 - Fire Department Heat Pump and Weatherization, Department of Public Works Heat Pump

5 Required Criteria for Green Community Designation:

1. Set requirements to minimize life-cycle energy costs for new construction; one way to meet these requirements is to adopt the new Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) Stretch Code.

9th Edition Stretch Code Modeling Analysis:

     a. 2200 sq ft 3 bedroom single-family house-electric heat

     b. 3800 sq ft 3 bedroom single-family house-electric heat

     c. 2200 sq ft 3 bedroom single-family house-gas heat

     d. 3800 sq ft 3 bedroom single-family house-gas heat

2. Provide as-of-right siting in designated locations for renewable/alternative energy generation, research & development, or manufacturing facilities.
 
3. Adopt an expedited application and permit process for as-of-right energy facilities.

4. Establish an energy use baseline and develop a plan to reduce energy use by twenty percent (20%) within five (5) years.
 
5. Purchase only fuel-efficient vehicles.
