Excise Taxes

Motor Vehicle Excise Taxes

Excise bills are generated by the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Bills are mailed to the last know mailing address that the Registry has. If you move, you should contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles and inform them of your new mailing address.

  • Bills are issued on an annual basis, January or February of the calendar year.
  • If a new vehicle is purchased during the calendar year, you will receive another excise tax for that vehicle.
  • Excise taxes are due 30 days from the date of issue.

What happens if not paid by due date?
If the excise tax is not received by the due date, it will then go on demand. There will be a $30.00 demand fee and interest added to the original excise tax. Demands are due 14 days from the date of issue.

What happens if demand is not paid by the due date?
If the demand payment is not received by the due date, it then will go on warrant with the deputy collector. A deputy collector’s fee will be added also. A warrant will be mailed to you. Checks should be made payable to the "Town of Salisbury" and mailed to the deputy collector at the remittance address below.

The deputy collector is located at different Registries in Massachusetts. You can go there and pay them directly. Call to find which Registry that they are located at.

If you feel you do not owe this excise tax, do not ignore it! Please contact the Assessor’s Office at 978-465-8242, to find out if you are entitled to abatement. If you choose to ignore this bill, it will continue to accrue interest and fees.

Boat Excise Tax

Boat Excise bills are due 60 days from the date of issue.

Bills are issued in the fall, September or October (i.e. FY 2009 for the boat being in the water for the summer of 2008).

What happens if not paid by due date?
If the excise tax is not received by the due date, it will then go on demand. Failure to pay said excise tax will result in a penalty being imposed which shall be equal to twenty dollars or twenty per cent of the amount of the excise due, which ever is greater (Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 60B: Section 4). There will also be a $30.00 demand fee and interest added to the original excise tax. Demands are due 14 days from the date of issue.
