Lafayette Road Reconstruction Project

Road

Project Scope

Initial work has begun on a major project to reconstruct Lafayette Road.  This will be a multi-year project to completely rehabilitate the roadway from Salisbury Square to the New Hampshire line.  Work will include a reconstruction and re-paving of the street, relocation of utilities, new sidewalks and a shared-use path, a re-configuration of the intersection of Lafayette Road and Forest Road, new and safer crosswalks (particularly at the Elementary School), and two roundabouts – one at the intersection of Lafayette Road and Toll Road and other at the intersection of Lafayette Road and Pike/Collins Street (Rte. 286).
This State-funded project has been in the planning stages for several years.  The contract was awarded in the fall of 2023 to Newport Construction Corp., who submitted a winning bid of $18,371,000. It is expected to last between 2-3 construction seasons.
During the course of the project, there will be traffic disruptions along the Lafayette Road corridor from time to time.  The contractor will provide the Town with a 2/3 week “look-ahead” schedule of where they will be working along the roadway and what the anticipated disruptions may be.  This schedule will be posted on the Town’s website and social media pages.  The Town’s DPW is in charge of local coordination and communication with the contractor, National Grid and the public.  If residents and business owners have problems accessing their properties during construction, please contact the DPW at (978) 462-7611.
Update 4/3/24
Due to significant road construction on Route 1 - Lafayette Rd in front of Dunkin Donuts in Salisbury, a short detour will continue down Gardner St to Maple St and down Spring St in order to maintain a safe flow of traffic around the construction site. Expect delays and consider alternative routes of travel for the next couple days.
