A major project to upgrade Driftway, the street just to the north of the Beach Center, is about to begin. During this week, equipment will be brought to the site and erosion controls will be installed. Actual construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 3. The project includes the installation of new sidewalks and curbing, new drainage, new crosswalks, period lighting, landscaping, re-paving, and striping of new parking spots. The goal is to reach substantial completion of the project, except for the final coat of paving, before June 30. Final paving will then be done in the Fall.
With construction starting on Driftway and continuing on the Welcome Center project at the west end of the Broadway Mall and the corner of Beach Road and Cable Avenue, the Town will be making best efforts to emphasize pedestrian safety during the upcoming warm weather months. Thus, there will be times when Broadway will be closed to vehicular traffic. This will be necessary because with the recent approval of outdoor seating for two restaurants on the western end of Broadway, all vehicular traffic on Broadway will need to exit via Central Ave. However, during the months of May and June, access to Driftway will be limited during weekday construction hours, and there may be times when Driftway will be completely closed to traffic for safety reasons.
