Open Burning Permit Information

January 15th to May 1st is the approved burning season here in Massachusetts, but you must have a permit from the Fire Department before you begin burning that pile.

Open burning must be done:

  • Between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from January 15 to May 1;
  • At least 75 feet from all buildings;
  • On land proximate to the place of generation of such material or at a place specifically designated on the permit;
  • A responsible person MUST be in attendance at all times while the fire is burning;
  • A garden hose attached to an adequate water source must be available for fire control on the site. The hose must be able to reach the area where the burning takes place;

Call the MassDEP Air Quality Hotline at (800) 882-1497 to find out if air quality is acceptable for burning.
